Kandy hawkers evicted PDF Print E-mail

Hundreds of pavement hawkers with unauthorized structures in the Kandy town were forcefully evicted by the army and police this morning, sources said.

The eviction programme carried out by the military personnel begun early this morning. The hawkers who had their structures destroyed told Daily Mirror online that they did not fight back and were now seated on the pavement as a mark of protest.

“We do not have the strength to fight against the military and police but we will sit here today to show our protest. It is unfair to ruin our businesses this way. We have been functioning here for years,” hawker, Saman Anura Perera said.

Acting Mayor of Kandy Suminda Wickramasingha had told Daily Mirror online last week that the hawkers would be given an alternative area to run their businesses and the eviction programme was carried out in order to clean up the Kandy city and make room for pedestrians to walk peacefully on the pavements.

A discussion is expected to take place between the Kandy Municipal Council members and the pavement hawkers on April 28 in a bid to solve the issue peacefully.

The Livestock Department is taking measures including the prohibition of the use of artificial semen and educating farmers on the proper means of controlling the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) reported in Kundasale and Meda Maha Nuwara divisions, a senior Livestock Development Ministry official said.Cattle transportation in Kandy district had been halted after an outbreak of the disease.

“Last week the two areas were gazetted as infected areas and movement of cattle from the two areas were prohibited until the disease is fully controlled”, he said.

The official said that normally a person transporting an animal has to get a health certificate from the Health Department and get it certified from the Divisional Secretariat, but now both offices have been informed to desist from issuing the clearance certificate.

He said that already two animals were reported to have died from the disease and added that health officials have taken measures to vaccinate around 5,000 cattle in the infected areas. According to him the most vulnerable are farm animals such as pigs, cows and goats.

More on a sacred city defaced PDF Print E-mail

I read the letter complaining about the abuse of posters etc in Kandy and had planned to write myself. Meanwhile, I am attaching two photos showing this abuse.

It appears that the long arm of the law is not long enough in Kandy to prevent the widespread abuse of electioneering posters and cutouts. Virtually every surface is now covered including numerous world heritage sites. Where are the Provincial Governor, the Chief Minister, the Kandy Mayor, the Chief of Police? Right in front of these civil servants, political goons have been given a free hand to paint numerous signs on the roads and erect huge sign boards and paste posters anywhere and everywhere. President Mahinda Rajapaksa makes regular visits to Kandy and cannot fail to have noticed this abuse of the election laws. There are none so blind as those who don’t want to see.
